Rubypaper

I’m obsessive about fashion magazines. Old and new, mainstream or excruciatingly difficult to acquire. It’s always been part of my own personal culture. Just think of the pictures of a great photographer, the style of a legendary designer, the beauty, poetry and escapism. Buy it and marvel. I go for the crowd-pleaser like Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Rushh, Jalouse with its unashamed popularism but I also adore the more carefully curated and very different fashion publications like Self Service, Grey, The Gentlewoman, Encens, I love you, Double, Man about town, Lula, 10, Another, Muse, Pop. Then there are the rare and threatened species found on ebay or abroad. I have a huge collection of very old Interview magazines, Zoom and the occasional LUI. I know the look of horror on people’s faces when I announce that fashion is an exceptional breadth of culture but I never doubt that the knowledge is there and has great value. Shoots that are like meditations on nature, the human condition or the future, almost like a quest or inner journey. Fashion, models, makeup artists, hair stylists and photographers joining forces to create remembrances of things past and gone, images that expand into examinations of what will come tomorrow, the sacred, cultures from around the world. People forget that fashion is an unlikely but extraordinary reflection of history.
In the run-up to London fashion week I thought I would introduce you to my latest discovery: RubyPaper. A Japanese magazine which juxtaposes fashion and art in a carefully curated way. The first issue is like a wonderfully spontaneous trip into the creative and curious landscape of Japanese fashion. It is immensely refreshing and a fashion triumph. Since I have no knowledge of the Japanese language I had to rely on the imagery to seduce me. It simply fascinated me. Magical. I cannot wait for the next issue to come out. Click here for a list of stockists.
Thank you Mayu for sending me issue 1!

Last week the Fashion Telegraph published a Top 50 list of fashion insiders on Twitter and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself at No. 26! The list became the subject of a debate both in conversation and on Twitter but all I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who follows me. It made by day!
