I had a look last night at the Burberry Prorsum pre fall 2009 collection. In complete contrast with the ostentatious Paris-Moscow Chanel show (which featured pieces of surprising luxury and opulence, slightly reminiscent of ancient decadent Russian times), Christopher Bailey bowled me over with winning ingredients: sexy and sharp floor-scraping flared trousers combined with seductive oversized mannish coats. He plays with sizes and shapes, the British heritage essence of the brand and pretty dark blue/grey/plum hues. His vision is modern and feminine and touches all the right notes, the looks have staying power with genuinely good fits and proportions. This collection feels like a stylish whisper that makes sense in a sea of luxury retailers and designers confronted with recession. I love the clothes, shapes and details, they’re simple and might seem obvious but they’re reflective of today’s economic environment.

The subtle hues and the interesting textures - love that fur coat! - add interest to otherwise simple pieces. (But I do love the OTT Chanel collection too!)
i.d.: You liked the Chanel collection? I thought it was bordering on the vulgar and completely irrelevant to commercial design's today. Who would buy that stuff except for super wealthy Russians?
That's a gret collection they put out. Christopher Bailey sure knows his cliantele and he delivers every season.
Deep in Vogue: This collection is particularly beautiful. I'm a fan of the classic trench and some of the coats!
